The Manitoba government is releasing progress reports of the status of fish populations within the Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis fisheries, Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Ralph Eichler announced today.
Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis are Manitoba’s second- and third-largest commercial fisheries, respectively. Commercial fishing generates approximately $100 million annually to the economy as well as valuable economic benefits to communities, such as employment opportunities, support for local businesses and provides a healthy food source to Manitobans and others through export markets. Manitoba will launch an engagement process this fall with Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis commercial fishers to review the stock assessment reports and to discuss future management plans for these valuable commercial fisheries.
