2021 is MEIA’s 30th Anniversary!
Happy new year! MEIA will be celebrating our 30th anniversary throughout the year with lots of exciting programming and events. We’re kicking things off with a refreshed logo and a new team member (welcome Kara!). Stay tuned for anniversary-related announcements and a shiny new website. We’re looking forward to celebrating this milestone with you!

MEIA is delighted to welcome Kara Gross, Education and Training Coordinator to the MEIA team! You may remember Kara as our summer student in 2020. We’re lucky to have her working with us again for the next few months to support the delivery of programming and training for the natural resources, energy and environment sectors. Welcome Kara!
The Deb Tardiff MEIA Student Chapter Scholarship
Reminder! Applications due January 31, 2021.
In memory of the founder of MEIA’s Student Chapter, MEIA has created the Deb Tardiff Scholarship to support Manitoban students. This $1,000 scholarship is open to all Manitoban post-secondary students from all disciplines.
The selection committee will look for:
• MEIA Student Chapter membership (mandatory)
• Volunteering
• Contribution to environmental sciences
• Academic Achievement
Applications due January 31, 2021. Scholarship will be awarded in April 2021. Applications should be 2 pages maximum, send to [email protected]

The Manitoba Career Fair is a virtual event, hosted by Manitoba Career Prospects and organized by the Manitoba Tourism Education Council. This event helps fill the void of cancelled and postponed career fairs in 2020/21 as a result of social distancing efforts.
The purpose is to help students, parents and educators discover and learn more about the thousands of career opportunities in Manitoba in a multitude of industries. Information about industry trends, major employers and education options will also be available.
NOTE: This is NOT not a job fair where employers will promote job openings to job seekers.
Learning opportunities include 50 exhibitors in a virtual tradeshow environment with live chat, fun and informative live streaming events, games and contests.

Moving to Net Zero: Manitoba Hydro Ready to Meet Federal Guidelines
December 11, 2020 News Release:
Manitoba Hydro’s strategy to respond to climate change includes continuing to further reduce global GHG emissions by enhancing the generation output of existing generating stations, and continually looking at how wind, solar and a wide array of emerging electricity technologies such as batteries and bio-energy systems may fit in future energy supply planning. As the energy landscape evolves, Manitoba Hydro continues to monitor trends in the electrification of transportation, as well as the adoption of heat pumps, geothermal systems and other energy-related technologies that will be of significant importance going forward. The corporation also periodically produces a Climate Change Report to provide insight into its response to climate change, with the latest published in 2020.

The Heat Academy

Establishing affordable and reliable biomass-based heat utilities in towns, villages and rural areas.
At this Heat Academy session we will introduce the concept of Rural Heat – small scale biomass-based district heat networks – and share experiences and best practice from Finland and Sweden. We will highlight the wider opportunities of such installations, including the potential benefits for municipalities and woodland owners, and introduce an initiative aiming to assist residents and businesses in implementing small-scale heat networks in Atlantic Canada. The session will involve speakers from Canada and the Nordic region, all with extensive know-how and practical experience in implementing and operating small-scale biomass district and neighbourhood heating systems.

The Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program is accepting applications for funding to conduct studies linked to the advancement of innovation in the forest sector in support of a future capital investment or strategic shift by forest sector firms.

Report: Canada’s Energy Future 2020
Canada’s Energy Future 2020: Energy Supply and Demand Projections to 2050 is the latest long-term energy outlook from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) published December 2020.
The Energy Futures series explores how possible energy futures might unfold for Canadians over the long term. Energy Futures uses economic and energy models to make these projections. CER bases the projections on assumptions about future trends in technology, energy and climate policies, energy markets, human behaviour and the structure of the economy.
