July Sustainability Spotlight: Standard Carbon

/

In a world where businesses are becoming increasingly more aware of their environmental impact, Standard Carbon shines as a leader in making sustainability simple and practical. Founded to help companies calculate their carbon footprints accurately, Standard Carbon has grown from a small startup to a pioneer in sustainability solutions.

Standard Carbon’s journey began by supporting technology for creating carbon offsets. But a pivotal moment came when they realized businesses needed a way to link environmental data with financial figures. This led to the development of SCOP3™, a high-tech platform that automates the calculation of Scope 3 emissions—the indirect greenhouse gases companies generate.

“At Standard Carbon, we saw that carbon isn’t just about the environment; it affects a company’s finances too,” explained co-founder Alex Stuart. Alongside Justin Phillips and Brian Beveridge, they brought decades of expertise in renewable energy and carbon markets to create a tool that bridges the gap between environmental sustainability and financial reporting.

One of Standard Carbon’s key innovations is integrating emission calculations with financial data systems. By syncing with a company’s accounting software, their platform ensures that carbon footprint assessments are accurate and can be done in real-time.

“Our software works alongside a company’s financial records,” said Justin. “This means businesses can track and report their emissions as easily as their finances.”

Standard Carbon’s impact goes beyond meeting regulations. During Canada’s Clean Fuel regulations rollout, they helped oil and gas companies meet tight audit deadlines, unlocking significant funding for clean technology.

Looking ahead, Standard Carbon aims to tackle the challenge of supply chain emissions, which make up a large part of a company’s carbon footprint. Their goal is to help businesses cut up to 80% of these indirect emissions, driving sustainability across various industries.

“In today’s world of climate risks and regulations, our mission is clear,” said Brian. “We want to be the go-to choice for businesses wanting to understand and reduce their carbon footprint.”

As Standard Carbon continues to innovate in the face of ever strengthening regulations, their commitment to assisting customers with compliance remains strong. By staying ahead of industry trends and regulations, they empower businesses to make smart decisions that support both their bottom line and the planet.

“Our journey is about more than just reducing emissions,” Alex concluded. “It’s about showing businesses how sustainability can be a source of strength and resilience. Together, we can build a future where sustainability is the norm, not the exception.”

Standard Carbon’s story isn’t just about technology—it’s a story of how businesses can thrive by embracing sustainability. As they guide companies through the complexities of a carbon-conscious world, Standard Carbon is shaping a future where environmental responsibility and business success go hand in hand.

The first product launched is Employee Commute (E.C.) Emissions. For companies primarily employing knowledge workers, the GHG emissions from employees commuting to work can be the single largest part of their carbon footprint. Standard Carbon started with this employee focused software to help companies engage with staff and encourage them to join on the path towards sustainability. This easy to set up, and even easier to use, tool gives powerful insights on how companies can start reducing their emissions.
