Job Description Assistant Lab Technician’s position is critically important. The incumbent must be 100% dedicated to providing the very best in attention to detail. The successful candidate will be in direct control of water analysis, lab duties, algae identification, aquatic weed identification, data collection and recording, scientific report writing, and research. To analyze water samples, algae, weeds, and invertebrates, assist the field technicians. The candidate must be willing to learn about water remediation—record keeping and report writing are necessary. The candidate must be self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team. You will report to the President. You will work as a team and work independently at times. And you will, for sure, be expected to bring new ideas to the table.

Job Specifications- Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities (TDRs)

Comply with all safety regulations and report any hazards to the proper authority

Gathering & assessing water samples, examining aquatic weeds, invertebrates, algae

Report writing and record-keeping

Conduct Laboratory tests

General duties – research, improve ID guides, photograph water, riparian etc. Performing any other tasks required by the Manager Assist and communicate with field technicians Throughout the season, think of ways to improve the identification system and brainstorm other water assessment tests that can help improve our service. Proper labelling of samples is paramount (client or pond name and date) Communicate with field technicians if there was potentially harmful biomatter (blue-green algae, etc.) in the sample Ability to lift 50-75 lbs

Responsibilities

80% – Assessing samples, running laboratory tests, examining aquatic weeds and algae

15% Report writing, scientific data collection and record-keeping, assisting field staff

5% General duties – photo, research, ID guide improvements Qualifications demonstrated proficiency in written/ oral communication (writing/editing/formatting) in the English language Demonstrated proficiency using a microscope and doing chemical tests Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision Must be alert and resourceful and be able to interact with a cross-section of individuals Must be able to demonstrate patience and perseverance and embrace change when it occurs Credentials and Experience Enrolled in Enviro Sciences, Science, Biology, Agriculture, Engineering or other First aid/CPR training required A clean driving record required Interest in science and water remediation an asset Laboratory experience making notes and familiarity with data entry

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent, Fixed term contract, Internship / Co-op
Contract length: 4 months

Pay: $21.00-$30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
