Full job description
Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
The research assistant position involves conducting studies on remediating soils contaminated with toxic metals using economically viable amendments. Candidates should possess a thorough understanding of soil analytical techniques, proficiency in data analysis, and experience in scientific writing. Preference will be given to students who have completed courses in soil science and basic chemistry. Strong data analytical skills would be considered as an added advantage. Environmental Science, Geography and Chemistry students are encouraged to apply.
Duties:
- Prepare equipment and materials for research.
- Perform academic research, standard tests and experiments.
- Monitor and document research status and findings.
- Assist with duties related to the production of articles, publications, reports and presentations.
- Prepare literature reviews.
- Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
- Assist in the acquisition of research materials and supplies.
- Perform data/word processing, routine computations, and record keeping.
- Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of ENV-1600 and one of the Soil Science courses (GEOG-2213 / GEOG-2214/ ENV-4615) and any basic chemistry courses
- Environmental Science, and Chemistry area of study
- Environmental Science Major with higher than 3.0 overall GPA
- Basic soil science analytical skills
- Academic writing skills
- Able to stand for more than 4 hours, capable of lifting 10-20 kg of weight
- Occasional field visits to collect soil samples
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from May 1, 2024 – August 30, 2024 and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-150 hours.
