Narratives is currently seeking candidates for our Planner position to bring our stories to life. The position will be full-time, one-year term with the intention of transitioning to a permanent full-time position following a successful performance review.
Responsibilities
- Review, interpret, and apply a broad range of policy and legislation as it applies to a given project or objective
- Work with, interpret, and apply spatial information (e.g. from maps, surveys, and plans) as a key medium for thinking and communicating
- Interpret and apply demographic, topographic, the built environment, environmental, and socio-cultural context information
- With a team of planners, author community plans and work with a team to assemble documents that are clear and visually appealing, incorporate maps and spatial information, and synthesize background information, process information, and policy.
- Author memorandums, briefing notes, project descriptions, reports, and technical analyses. Identify sound and reasonable options for the client and be able to articulate a recommended course of action.
- Meaningfully and respectfully incorporate the socio-cultural dimension into the work of the planner, which may include ceremony, symbols, practices, and interpersonal relations
- Manage projects by monitoring scope, schedule, and budget, and delegate tasks to ensure the broader team is utilized
- Develop and implement community engagement plans to run engagement sessions, interview campaigns, workshops, focus groups, and other community events.
- Apply current disciplinary principles to the practice of the professional planner
Qualifications
- Two to five years of experience working in a professional planning environment with a diverse portfolio of past projects, roles, and practice. Commensurate and relevant academic and extracurricular experience may be considered in lieu.
- Demonstrated academic and/or practical experience in land use planning, environmental sciences, social sciences, human rights, or conflict resolution.
- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree in Indigenous/Native Studies, Social Sciences, Urban / Regional Planning, Environmental Studies, Geography, Policy Sciences, or equivalent. A relevant graduate degree is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated capacity to practice respectfully in a diverse cultural environment, which includes working in remote locations, Indigenous communities, and in a diverse workplace.
- Ability to travel and work in remote locations, commonly ranging from 1-3 days and more uncommonly up to 1-2 weeks.
- Knowledge and experience of GIS and the ArcGIS Pro platform is considered a strong asset
- Knowledge and experience of the Adobe Design suite, specifically InDesign, is considered a strong asset
- Hold a valid drivers’ license.

Salary Range: Minimum starting salary of $60,000 with potential for higher compensation up to $90,000 based on experience and qualifications.
